Rafter’s 5-Day Wilderness Nightmare Ends in Dramatic Helicopter Rescue
SurvivalAgainst All Odds
Gabriel Vaughn, a 26-year-old rafter, vanished on Oregon’s Illinois River and survived alone for five grueling days before a Coast Guard helicopter plucked him to safety. Vaughn was last seen near Greenwall Rapids, wearing a blue dry suit, helmet, and life jacket, when he decided to hike out toward the Chetco drainage.
A Desperate Search
When Vaughn failed to return, a massive search operation was launched, involving the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team and the U.S. Coast Guard. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew conducted multiple aerial searches, but it wasn’t until Friday morning that a private party working with search teams found Vaughn in the Illinois River Valley, approximately two miles downstream from where he was last seen.
Rescuers quickly realized Vaughn couldn’t be safely evacuated on foot due to injuries to his hands and feet, so they requested helicopter support. The Coast Guard helicopter arrived, lowering a rescue swimmer to hoist Vaughn to safety. He was flown to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay for evaluation, but authorities aren’t saying how he survived in the remote terrain or the extent of his injuries.
The search effort was a complex, multi-day operation that required close coordination between federal and local responders. It’s a miracle Vaughn made it out alive, and a proof to the bravery and skill of the rescue teams involved.
