Feds Take Down 18th Street Gang Leaders

Federal agents just arrested 12 alleged members of LA’s massive 18th Street gang in a major takedown. The gang’s been evading law enforcement by hiding in plain sight – literally, using tents to blend in with the homeless population in MacArthur Park and Skid Row.

Charges Pile Up

The suspects face a slew of charges, including murder, extortion, racketeering, conspiracy, and drug trafficking. It’s a big deal, considering the gang’s alleged ties to the Mexican Mafia. Oh, and they’re also accused of running illegal gambling dens and engaging in organized extortion – because, you know, drug trafficking and murder aren’t enough.

Prosecutors say the gang’s street boss, 59-year-old Keiko Marie Gonzalez (aka ‘Moms’), was the one calling the shots. She allegedly communicated directly with a Mexican Mafia member in prison, who was pulling the strings from behind bars. Gonzalez is accused of ordering hits on her own gang members, rivals, and other drug traffickers. Nice.

The Raid

As part of ‘Operation Dead Horse,’ authorities seized around $80,000 in cash, six firearms, and several pounds of drugs. They also recovered 175 pounds of fentanyl and methamphetamine during the investigation. Not bad for a day’s work.

Six suspects are still on the loose, with two believed to have fled to Mexico and Guatemala. Five defendants were scheduled to be arraigned in court, and if convicted, they’re facing some serious time – we’re talking life sentences.
