SF Mayor’s Security Detail Attacked Hours After He Calls for City Reset
CrimeSan Francisco’s Troubled Tenderloin Neighborhood Erupts in Violence
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s security detail was attacked Thursday evening, just hours after he called for a ‘reset’ of the city’s government. The incident occurred in the city’s troubled Tenderloin neighborhood when the mayor’s vehicle was blocked by several men.
Attack on Security Detail
The confrontation started around 5:40 p.m. near Cedar and Polk streets. Two unidentified male suspects sparked a physical altercation with the mayor’s security officers after they blocked the mayor’s vehicle. Video from the scene shows a security detail member being taken to the ground as officers worked to subdue the suspects.
One security officer sustained visible injuries during the altercation, but the mayor wasn’t harmed. Both suspects were arrested at the scene, and their identities haven’t been released. Two officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were assessed by paramedics.
Call for Reset
Earlier that day, Mayor Lurie posted a message on Facebook calling for a sweeping reset of San Francisco’s government structure. He proposed reforms aimed at consolidating the city’s contracting system, shortening and simplifying ballots, and increasing executive accountability. It’s unclear if the attack was directly related to the mayor’s call for reform.
The San Francisco Police Officers Association praised the response of officers, saying they ‘acted swiftly and courageously to protect’ the mayor. The union is wishing the injured officer a full and speedy recovery.
