Cop Killer’s Trial Gets Emotional
CrimeWidow Breaks Down in Court
Stephanie Diller, the widow of NYPD officer Jonathan Diller, wept in court as prosecutors described the brutal shooting that took her husband’s life. The defendant, Guy Rivera, allegedly fired multiple shots at Diller during a routine traffic stop in 2024.
A Sea of Blue
Dozens of police officers filled the courtroom, with many getting choked up during the proceedings. They were there to support Stephanie Diller and to see justice served for their fallen brother.
Prosecutor Ken Zawistowski gave a graphic description of the shooting, saying the bullet ‘ripped through’ Diller’s abdomen, severing a vital artery. The body camera footage of the shooting was played in court, showing the moments officers tried to revive Diller.
Rivera’s Defense
Rivera’s attorney, Erin Darcy, claims the shooting was an ‘unintentional discharge’ as a police sergeant tried to pull Rivera out of the vehicle. But Zawistowski said Rivera had a choice that day – to surrender peacefully or choose violence. ‘The defendant had choices. That day, he chose violence,’ he said.
NYPD PBA President Patrick Hendry promised that officers will continue to show up in court to support Diller’s loved ones throughout the trial.
