Illegal Immigrant Charged with Murder of Chicago College Student
CrimeMurder in Chicago
An illegal immigrant, Jose Medina-Medina, 25, is set to face court after being accused of killing a Loyola University Chicago student, Sheridan Gorman. The hearing was delayed due to Medina-Medina’s treatment for tuberculosis.
Details of the Case
Medina-Medina allegedly killed Gorman on March 19 while she was with friends on a pier. He entered the US illegally in May 2023 and was released into the country under the Biden administration. Medina-Medina is facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and other offenses.
A detention hearing was initially scheduled for Monday but was postponed due to Medina-Medina’s health concerns. He will likely appear virtually at the hearing on Friday.
Victim’s Family Speaks Out
Gorman’s family stated that the shooting doesn’t change their view of Loyola University Chicago. They said Sheridan felt safe and at home at the university. The family also expressed their love for Sheridan, describing her as someone who ‘radiated something even greater—a rare and unmistakable warmth, a spirit that was vibrant, compassionate, and full of life.’
A police source described the shooting as an apparent ambush, with the suspect reportedly wearing a face mask. Medina-Medina was captured on security video without a mask and was identified through a police database.
