Judge Blasts Feds Over ICE Detention Center Conditions
PoliticsFeds Given Deadline to Fix ICE Detention Center Issues
A federal judge has given the government until Thursday to sort out access to lawyers for detainees at an ICE detention center in Minnesota. The judge, Nancy Brasel, wasn’t buying the government’s claims that detainees have adequate access to lawyers, calling their argument ‘difficult to sell’.
Detainees Claim Lack of Access to Lawyers
Activists say detainees are being denied proper access to lawyers, including in-person meetings. The government claims detainees can make phone calls, but critics say ICE staff often hover nearby, making it hard for detainees to have private conversations.
Congresswoman Slams Conditions at Detention Center
Congresswoman Kelly Morrison, a Democrat from Minnesota, visited the detention center and was appalled by the conditions. She said there were no protocols in place to prevent the spread of diseases like measles, which has broken out in a Texas detention center. Morrison also claimed that detainees, including families with kids, were being sent to Texas without proper care.
Protesters Take a Stand
A protester, Jake Lang, was arrested for destroying an anti-ICE sculpture outside the Minnesota state capitol. Lang was released on bail and ordered to stay away from the capitol. The incident highlights the growing tensions over ICE detention centers and the treatment of migrants.
