FBI Still Clueless on Robert Levinson’s Disappearance 20 Years On
CrimeIt’s Been Almost 20 Years
Former FBI agent Robert Levinson’s disappearance in Iran is still a mystery. The FBI is renewing its appeal for info, and it’s offering up to $5 million for any tips that could lead to his recovery or return. Levinson, who was 58 at the time, vanished on March 9, 2007, while visiting Iran’s Kish Island.
A Personal Case
For former FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker, who worked with Levinson, the case is personal. ‘I met Bobby Levinson when I was transferred to Miami in 1987,’ Swecker says. ‘He was kind of the iconic agent on the squad because he was prolific in developing cooperating cartel members and informants.’ Swecker describes Levinson as a seasoned field investigator who preferred working cases rather than moving into management roles.
Iran’s Denials
Iran has long denied capturing Levinson or knowing his whereabouts. But U.S. officials say evidence shows Iranian authorities detained him. The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned two Iranian intelligence officials in 2020 for their alleged involvement in Levinson’s disappearance and cover-up. It’s a ridiculous situation – the U.S. knows Iran’s likely responsible, but it won’t admit it.
