Freshman Sensation TJ Adams Takes Waubonsie Valley by Storm
SportsMeet the 6-foot Point Guard Who’s Got Everyone Talking
Waubonsie Valley freshman TJ Adams is making waves in the high school basketball scene, and it’s not hard to see why. The 6-foot point guard has already made a name for himself, despite being just three appearances into his varsity career. Adams’ dad, Tommy, played professionally overseas, and it’s clear the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
A Natural Fit
Adams worked with the varsity team during summer workouts, but started the regular season playing on the sophomore and junior varsity teams. That all changed when he got the call to join the big leagues. ‘I just kept on trying to grind and get better every single day,’ Adams said. ‘Eventually, it led to me getting to varsity. I didn’t feel overmatched.’ And it shows – Adams fit right in during Waubonsie’s 47-23 win over DeKalb, scoring eight points, grabbing three rebounds, and making one steal in limited minutes.
Praise from the Coach
Waubonsie Valley coach Andrew Schweitzer is a big fan of Adams, saying he’s ‘a kid we knew about as a seventh and eighth grader… He’s a great kid, and in a lot of ways, he reminds me of Tyreek Coleman.’ Adams’ work ethic and coachability have won over the team, and it’s clear he’s here to stay. ‘He’s a sponge,’ Schweitzer said. ‘He loves the game, and he’s trying to learn everything.’ With performances like his 17-point showing in a come-from-behind victory last weekend, it’s no wonder Adams is making a name for himself.
As for what’s next, Adams’ teammates are excited to see what the future holds. ‘He practiced with us before, and he’s a full-blown varsity player now,’ said sophomore guard Kris Mporokoso. ‘He definitely has the talent… there’s so much more to come from him.’ And with Schweitzer sold on Adams’ abilities, it’s likely we’ll be seeing a lot more of this talented freshman in the years to come.
