Hudson River Miracle: Pilot, Passenger Cheat Death
AviationPilot, Passenger Survive Hudson River Crash
A Cessna 172 made an emergency landing in the Hudson River Monday night, but miraculously, the pilot and passenger swam to safety. The plane took off from Long Island before it was forced to land in the river just after 8 p.m.
The Middle Hope Fire Department said first responders were quickly dispatched to the scene. After a brief search, they found the plane within the City of Newburgh. Both occupants were able to free themselves from the aircraft and swim to shore, where they were evaluated by Newburgh Emergency Medical Services before being taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Officials Weigh In
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul called the incident ‘Another miracle on Hudson,’ and thanked first responders for their quick actions. New York Rep. Pat Ryan said he’s ‘closely monitoring reports’ of the emergency landing, and is ‘incredibly grateful’ for the Hudson Valley first responders who put their lives on the line to keep others safe.
The cause of the emergency landing is still under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration. It’s a reminder that even with the best training and equipment, anything can go wrong in the air. Fortunately, it won’t be a tragic reminder this time, thanks to the quick thinking of the pilot and the fast response of emergency services.
