Hungary Throws EU Under the Bus Over Russian Oil
PoliticsHungary’s Petty Power Play
Hungary’s government is threatening to block the EU’s latest round of sanctions against Russia unless they get their oil fix. Yeah, you read that right – they’re willing to sabotage the entire EU’s efforts to punish Russia for its war crimes just to get their hands on some Russian crude.
It all started when Ukraine halted oil shipments to Hungary and Slovakia via the Druzhba pipeline, citing damage from Russian drone attacks. Now, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó is throwing a tantrum, saying they won’t let the EU pass any new sanctions until the oil starts flowing again.
A Bit of a Hypocrite
This is pretty rich coming from a country that’s been sucking up to Russia for years. Hungary’s nationalist leader, Viktor Orbán, has been making excuses for Moscow’s antics and whining about how they can’t possibly survive without Russian fossil fuels. Newsflash: most of Europe has managed to wean themselves off Russian energy, but Hungary’s still clinging to it like a bad habit.
And if that’s not enough, Hungary’s also threatening to block a $106 billion EU loan to Ukraine, which is desperately trying to stay afloat amidst the war. So, it’s not just about the oil – it’s about Hungary trying to strong-arm the EU into doing their bidding.
