Half of Students Too Afraid to Show Up

It’s not exactly a secret that the ‘Operation Metro Surge’ immigration crackdown in Minnesota has been a disaster. The fact that federal agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens during the operation led to nationwide protests, and now it’s having a tangible impact on local schools.

At one Minneapolis school, a staggering 50% of students are too scared to show up to class. That’s right, half of the student body is MIA, and it’s not hard to see why. Parents and teachers are on edge, regardless of their immigration status. The mere presence of ICE agents in the area is enough to keep kids at home.

A Climate of Fear

Don’t expect things to get back to normal anytime soon. The operation has created a climate of fear that won’t dissipate overnight. It’s a ridiculous situation, and it’s clear that something needs to change. The question is, what’s it going to take for that to happen?
