Jones Faces First Primary Challenge in 17 Years
PoliticsSen. Emil Jones III’s Unchallenged Streak Ends
For the first time in his 17-year Senate career, state Sen. Emil Jones III is facing a contested primary. Jones, who’s represented the 14th Senate District since 2009, is being challenged by Ahmed Karrar and Kenny Williams in the Democratic primary on March 17.
The District
The 14th Senate District spans a wide area of the south suburbs, covering neighborhoods from Roseland to Orland Park and Homer Glen. It includes all or parts of 19 suburbs, each with their own unique issues.
Jones’s Record
Jones, the son of former Senate President Emil Jones, Jr., won his seat in 2008 after his father’s retirement. He’s been re-elected unopposed five times since then. However, his tenure hasn’t been without controversy – he was charged with bribery in 2022, but the case ended in a mistrial. Jones later entered a deferred prosecution deal, avoiding a conviction.
The Challengers
Ahmed Karrar, an attorney and advocate for community development, is running on a platform of improving trust in government and fighting for issues like universal childcare and a graduated income tax. Kenny Williams, a businessman and former school board member, wants to bring his entrepreneurial experience to the Senate and focus on creating jobs and educating his constituents.
What’s at Stake
The primary challenge is a chance for voters to hold Jones accountable for his actions and decide if it’s time for a change. With issues like corruption, economic disparity, and lack of trust in government on the table, this election could have significant implications for the district’s future.
