Mexico’s Most Wanted Drug Lord Killed in US-Backed Raid
CrimeDeath Toll Rises After Cartel Leader’s Demise
The Mexican government’s taken out its most wanted man, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, aka ‘El Mencho’, in a US-backed operation that’s sparked chaos across the country. El Mencho, the leader of the notorious Jalisco New Generation cartel, was killed in a shootout with Mexican forces at his home on Sunday.
Cartel’s Revenge
The cartel’s reacted with violence, blocking roads and setting vehicles on fire. It’s been a messy day in Mexico, with Guadalajara, the country’s second-largest city, almost completely shut down as residents stayed indoors. Passengers arriving at the city’s airport were greeted with limited staff due to the violence.
The US Ambassador’s congratulated the Mexican authorities on the operation, saying it’s a result of ‘unprecedented levels’ of cooperation between the two countries. El Mencho was a top target for both governments, with a $15 million bounty on his head for his role in trafficking fentanyl into the US.
A Deadly Operation
The operation that took out El Mencho resulted in the deaths of seven people, including the cartel leader. Four were killed in the shootout, while three more, including El Mencho, died from their injuries later on. It’s a significant blow to the Jalisco New Generation cartel, one of Mexico’s most powerful and fastest-growing crime groups.
