Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance Enters 5th Week, Cadaver Dogs Benched
CrimeWeeks of Searching, No Signs of Nancy Guthrie
It’s been over five weeks since 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, vanished from her home in Tucson, Arizona. The search for her continues, but cadaver dogs that were initially used in the investigation are currently not being deployed.
No Leads, No Body, No Arrests
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos says the cadaver dogs are on standby and can be brought back in if needed. But for now, they’re not being used. It’s not entirely clear why, but experts say it could be because authorities think Guthrie might still be alive or that she’s being hidden in a place where dogs can’t detect her.
A retired police sergeant, Betsy Brantner Smith, says there are many reasons why cadaver dogs might not be used at this stage. ‘It’s possible they don’t have a good idea of where to search,’ she says. ‘Or they think she’s concealed in a place where dogs would have a hard time finding her.’ Smith also suggests that authorities might believe Guthrie has been taken to Mexico.
A Frustrating Search
The biggest lead so far is a Nest camera video showing a masked intruder on Guthrie’s doorstep the morning she disappeared. He’s described as about 5’9″ to 5’10” with a medium build, wearing a black Ozark Trail backpack. Despite tens of thousands of tips, no suspects have been publicly identified, and Guthrie remains missing.
Savannah Guthrie is pleading for anyone with information to come forward, and there’s a combined reward of over $1.2 million for information leading to her mother’s recovery.
