Trump’s Revenge? Kilmar Ábrego García Fights Vindictive Prosecution
PoliticsProsecution Smells Like Revenge
Kilmar Ábrego García’s lawyers are heading to court to get his human trafficking charges tossed out. They claim it’s all about revenge – that the Trump administration is out to get him after he won his case against wrongful deportation.
Ábrego García, a 30-year-old Salvadoran citizen, has been living and working in Maryland for years under ICE supervision. But after he was wrongly deported to El Salvador, the Supreme Court stepped in and said the White House had to bring him back. That’s when the trouble started.
A Fishy Arrest
It all began with a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee. Ábrego García was pulled over for speeding, and police found nine people in his car. They suspected human trafficking, but let him off with a warning. Now, prosecutors are using that stop as evidence against him.
The judge, Waverly Crenshaw, has already found some evidence that the prosecution might be vindictive. He’s pointed out that some statements from Trump officials, like Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, raise some red flags. It seems Blanche suggested that the Justice Department charged Ábrego García because he won his deportation case.
A Heated Battle
Ábrego García’s lawyers have been fighting with prosecutors for months over whether officials like Blanche should testify and what emails the Justice Department should hand over. The prosecution claims it’s all about one man – the federal prosecutor who decided to charge Ábrego García. But the judge isn’t buying it.
Crenshaw has reviewed the disputed documents and says they suggest a joint decision to prosecute Ábrego García. It’s getting ugly, and it’s about to get even uglier in court on Thursday.
