Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer isn’t having it. A day after President Trump’s State of the Union address, where he criticized gender transition, Whitmer used her State of the State address to defend transgender rights. It’s clear she won’t back down.

Whitmer spoke directly to the LGBTQ+ community, saying ‘In Michigan, everyone deserves to be who they are and love who they love.’ It’s a bold statement, and one that won’t sit well with the Trump administration. But Whitmer’s not apologizing. She’s promising to stand in the way of anyone who tries to take away their rights.

It’s a ridiculous thing to have to say, but apparently, it needs to be said: everyone deserves respect, no matter what. Whitmer’s statement is a slap in the face to Trump’s divisive rhetoric, and it’s about time someone called him out on it.
